As I write this letter, we are finally getting just a hint of coolness in the air, and the first presidential debate is tonight.
As I reflected about what to write about this month, I thought about how thankful I am that our Session has a very high view of scripture and allows me to preach the Word unhindered! We have just completed our fourth study of the Book of Daniel, so I thought this would be a good time to review what we hopefully have learned so far.
In our first study of the first chapter, we were reminded of the importance of taking a stand for what we believe. We must not compromise our personal holiness. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good, acceptable, and perfect.” And as we take a stand and pursue holiness, we will not only help ourselves, but positively influence the people around us.
Next we studied the first part of chapter two, and we were reminded to turn to God first, especially during the trials of life. And we should do this because Christ came to dwell with us and to deliver us from our deepest trial – alienation from Him!
Then we studied the second part of chapter two and we were reminded that the Kingdom of God will last forever, so we should proclaim our faith with much more enthusiasm than the way we cheer our favorite sports team!
And this past Sunday, as we studied chapter three, we were reminded that since God is both sovereign and present, we must put our faith in Him during the fires of life. By faith we have the assurance of a glorious future with Christ in heaven, that is guaranteed by His finished work on the cross!
The Book of Daniel is once again showing us how we can benefit from the whole counsel of God, and just how relevant it is to us today!
If you are not doing so already, I would like to encourage you to read and prayerfully study the text of the upcoming sermon each week. May you continue to be blessed as we study and apply God’s Word together!
