Pastor James Thorpe
Jim Thorpe was raised in the Presbyterian Church as a covenant child of Eau Claire Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, Jim began a sales career with American Home Food Products. But Jim felt God’s call to full-time ministry while serving as a deacon at Sycamore Presbyterian Church in Midlothian, VA, under the ministry of Teaching Elder Harry Long.
In 1996 Jim and his family moved to Saint Louis, MO, where he attended Covenant Seminary and graduated with a Master of Divinity Degree in 2000. He served as Assistant and then Associate Pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Montgomery and Pastor of Aimwell Presbyterian Church in Ridgeway, S.C., before accepting the call to pastor First Presbyterian Church, Atmore, AL, in September of 2007.
Jim is enjoying fruitful ministry in Atmore, where he considers himself a pastor/evangelist and minister to the whole city. Jim is a member of the Atmore Lions Club and the Vice-President of Sav-a-Life pregnancy counseling centers. He has served as a volunteer chaplain at the local hospital, and he is also Chairman of the Christian Education Committee for the Gulf Coast Presbytery.
Jim and his wife, Mary, have three children, Steven (28), Julia (18), and David (15). Mary is a full-time elementary school teacher.
