To help us along the path of spiritual growth this New Year, I am offering some suggestions from Pastor Steven J. Cole:
First, prayerfully write a one-sentence purpose statement for your life and a few short- and long-range goals in light of it. For example, his was: “To glorify God by being a godly husband, father, and grandfather by using my gift of pastor-teacher for the building up of the body of Christ and the furtherance of the Gospel.”
Second, put in a place a regular, daily time for scripture reading, meditation, and prayer, including some time for scripture memorization!
Third, work on developing godly character qualities, especially in areas where you are weak! (If you don’t know where to start, ask your spouse or a good friend. They can tell you!)
Fourth, develop the habit of read solid Christian books that help you grow spiritually. Personally, I think biographies of famous believers are fascinating! Mary likes Christian fiction. Whatever it is – stick with it and you will be blessed!
Fifth, get into a small group Bible study where you can deepen relationships, encourage others, and be encouraged in the Lord!
Sixth, ask God how he wants you to serve in light of your gifts and start serving somewhere, anywhere!
Seventh, if you haven’t already, set some financial goals to help you become a better steward of the resources that God has entrusted to you.
Perhaps God’s Word today has “hit you like a fire hose!” Don’t let it bowl you over. Ask God to show you the main couple of things that you really need to focus on first. And I pray that all of us will look back on 2019 as a year of tremendous spiritual growth in the Lord!
In Christ, Pastor Jim
